Sicard Hollow on No Simple Road - October 21st, 2022

Without further ado the No Simple Road Crew gives you Sicard Hollow! Here we go welcome to the show yeah let us know who for everybody who can't see who were talking to %HESITATION well I've I've played mandolin and figure it all out hi my name's Alex king I play guitar in the band as well so yeah well welcome the show guys I'm Aaron thank imagine I'm Mel and then apple the only yeah it's easy it's my last name I feel like I always have to say that's not a nickname it's actually my last name all right I'm Alex and well who are we missing from second hollow Matt a man plays the role and perish there's plays now he was only on up right now he's playing electric bass and upright with so little bit of both right I I want to start off with you guys and just say thanks man first off %HESITATION what you're always like what you're always looking for like good new music N. I can't remember how I found out about you guys I think it might have been like the algorithm in Instagram and that will be part sometimes yeah during an hour battle on that thing it's weird figure and I joined the you think you're making headway any take eighty steps back and then you know for sure really but when I put you guys on for the first time like my first reaction was we gotta get these guys on the show and then after listening for a while I was like this is my favorite new shit but real for real and I'm just curious because you guys are are are you young band as far as like how long you've been together right yeah and I've done a little research on you guys like there's a lot going on here said take me back in like tell me a little bit about how you guys got started as a band men like that are I think all of us kind of have a different perspective on that %HESITATION but I would say that Alex and I met %HESITATION at Belmont in two thousand and sixteen or so private school here and nationally kind is like a huge music school okay more like the business side and like commercial majors or whatever can you pretty much go there for music essentially so %HESITATION clear the South Carolina yeah a little bit you know %HESITATION but we broke ground that's not as popular as Berkeley's but the music business program they have there is quite a lot of they get a lot of attraction from that right okay and so we were in like a a fun group of people and everybody jams people started bands and %HESITATION it was everyone like the Grateful Dead and fashion jam music and all that we're off on that kind of stuff and %HESITATION visually I think some of us got turned on like railroad earth and bands like that and you know yonder deles obviously blown up right %HESITATION when so all of us are writing songs all of us are playing together and %HESITATION that sort of got a year so maybe like two thousand eighteen right after we %HESITATION after we graduated Alex had been writing a whole lot of songs posted online get a bunch of good feedback and %HESITATION got offered to play a wedding up in buffalo %HESITATION if I'm right I think you guys are buddy Nick riffle join you on that yeah I'm and then shortly after that %HESITATION I had been learning some chords on mandolin just enough to like plate record my own shit just on my own he didn't even play the mandolin like when we started out like you are playing it was like kind of figured putting pieces of a puzzle together which one do we need it like I talk it I guess I'll try to start taking the mandolin you know exactly wow so started playing mandolin and %HESITATION they asked if I would want to come and play that show them and I was like hell yeah sounds like fun and %HESITATION we we we met Matt Alex not both on different occasions or fiddle player %HESITATION I I'm at night it's little show now you see Matt out all around it's in I'll I'll let him continue then I'll kind of no one a couple little things from my perspective of the song hearing it from other yeah but I'll let you continue so we were cut Matt Alex was like I know this little player he's fucking crazy he's awesome and %HESITATION I had run into running about myself a few times out it just shows around Nashville or whatever and %HESITATION I came over and like you're like holy shit this you can really play and not only and so we got to our we had an we had a match that out buffalo wedding thing and I was honestly being sick on holiday didn't have a bass player in baseball there are players in mandolin and fiddle went there and did that and %HESITATION and we posted some videos online even before that we got really good feedback for was really urging and %HESITATION got a bad name from %HESITATION one of Alex's family friends up like a Facebook thing in a row that I know yeah I was interesting %HESITATION the man is the road that I the road behind the house I grew up in Birmingham Alabama but %HESITATION I'll kind of pick up until in some things we met in school and like I wasn't even you know I kind of started playing guitar again I learned when I was fifteen or so never got that great I could play like five six chords you know and %HESITATION that's about it and %HESITATION my my what a national brand will he would always try to get me to jam and I I wasn't confident enough about it like I blew him off like twenty five how do you like not like I gotta go home and like do some shit you know because I was just scared I felt this school our at all these kids are really good and I was super inspiring same time because you got to see what I got to see what was capable of like my peers on an instrument not like these guys that I would go and see shows and see them on the big stage like music do were smoking a joint like he's blowing my mind on a guitar might say well it was encouraging I met Matt you would just hug we would be at shows jam shows electronic shows in Nashville and you know he'd be bopping around I'd like that kid is either really higher you just like really happy you just hug me he was he would lose that little dude bounce bopping around and come to find out he shreds the fiddle %HESITATION yen back to eat we invited him over to the house %HESITATION and we played friend the devil's first time like what you guys gonna do you know we're still kind of figuring out how to get blue rap because we didn't I didn't listen to bluegrass at all five years ago now so we service friendly dental imagist talking goes off we're due to do you know and I were just like John drop all these shit right we got it you know so it it form like that is super organically and there was never an intention to do this you know like it was just fun and terrifying at the same time and it started to come together and I was like I didn't want to happen you know you know I'm on stage I'm going out yeah reach it but you didn't want it to happen my god I was like I didn't move to Nashville for music like if the if found me which is such a and nontraditional and I was scared like I never played on a fucking station for like hi my friends there are they signed me up for a game that was under Alex king and friends I played electric guitar will actually played bases before circuit Allah before I was doing bluegrass like I was trying to like just write these tunes they ask me your play this show I go now do not put my name on that they go well if your name is on the talking to our guests said the I was like terrified just to put myself out there you know how is okay but you were given a chance that sounds good at like pushed you to do it oh no is the best thing that ever fucking happening on tire life you know I got such a high from the first time I played I was like that's it you know I've taken whatever substance you want I've never fucking felt like that before you know so %HESITATION yeah they community and national really pushed us to do it and when you believe in yourself and you have the drive like you can fucking do whatever anything you want you know I would love to see is that you're like the reluctant musician so wait a minute Alex what were you doing in that music school if you are kind of reluctant to performing in music I had gone to college in Auburn and got really into partying and I pretty much dropped everything and yeah good and then he let you know so I took a little bit time out I moved to baton Rouge Louisiana and went to rehab for a little bit and I needed to like I needed to integrate back into something healthy that wasn't going back to Alabama that was a saying in baton Rouge as I did not want to be there and like I was like I'm familiar but in close to home my mom grew up in Brentwood I have family here so I applied online got accepted in the hail Mary you know I was like well I like music I don't know what the fuck I want to do it to be quite honest when I'm and I just was fortunate enough to have to be able to have that opportunity to go back to school %HESITATION and yeah I don't remember a damn thing I learned through through that degree I passed in the music business degree but the one that came out of it is I've been became I'm a touring musician so it's fucking it's crazy lined up yeah I I gotta ask yourself this question yeah you you said that you know five years ago you weren't really picking bluegrass I couldn't fucking techno solo at all I couldn't flapping and squawking G. Ryan forty five yeah I am not even close to okay so that's just a testament to his late how amazing humanity is right you know what I mean like how incredible that it doesn't even matter how long you've been playing where you're at right now is like and you can remember a time that you didn't even know how to do it %HESITATION under Senate yeah you can listen here you got another guitarist at first because I wouldn't say I can't take it so %HESITATION I won't ask talking up which I did quite a bit and those did it is not feel good when you're on stage you're just completely botching that so I'm like I'll take a step back from that and so I you know put in the time and develop my own phrasing and you know vocabulary with the instrument so where do you start with something like that man like I'm questioning why I'm just I'm asking because I started picking a year ago I'm playing guitar my whole life I'm a campfire guitar player in N. at the beginning of this year I was like I'm gonna learn how to fucking pick bluegrass and that is the hardest shit I have ever done in my whole life reset my fight in the movies right but so I where did you start when you started like really want to dig in and learn it what did yeah %HESITATION I took you to read first I didn't find too many like right okay you can find like all these different things but like figuring out how to practice intention the only focus on something rather than like trying to digest all this material like I started with like Brian sudden here isn't legendary flapping harsh used to play in a high rise in a bunch other shit like he's the man the probably one of the best to ever do it he has an online flapping course which I bought it didn't work out at first like it was so frustrating but slowing things down playing with a metronome and fiddle tunes that'll sense like slow the fuck down learn the simple melodies and they're gonna be I mean and hours upon hours code was amazing for me like if I'm going to be completely honest like okay Corentin unemployment allowed me to play guitar for ten hours a day seven days a week which I stuck to like a fucking like it was my day job you know why is what working from home has done what lake how did you how did you have that motivation just because of code like you were just bored like that's still even with COPD you can write you what you know to me like how did you yeah how did you get so not a lot of clients my my my motivation I found it through %HESITATION it's interesting I can parallel that wasn't running I got into long distance running and the dedication to that just allowed with the guitar in it in my whole life not like I got healthier as I was going crazy I'm like what the fuck am I doing like getting high all day watching TV whatever still playing guitar but then it's like man we have all this time like I saw an opportunity to chat to put the energy towards something while we're not playing any shows in like it really really helped me out in every aspect of my life so wow congratulations man that feels good to be like the at the beginning of your career and you already went through your craziness so you have this already have experience is what I mean and you're just starting that very unique position to have will we do was your experience will cover the same minus the running yeah try the U. two classes %HESITATION I had a I've been like I I play I play a little bit a guitar so I I think it's our but you know it's plain mandolin I was I was doing my own thing with it yeah it's amazing to me meant to so I've I've watched quite a bit of your stuff on you too bye listen all your stuff now and like I A. it's hard to believe that it's five years of playing it all right N. N. it's gotta feel weird from your side like what's going on now right like is this at ourselves now we always say I mean as you move in so perhaps this is fucking crazy while using the word we're living the dream and we don't take it for granted yeah it's I'm sorry no it's just has a lot to look at the list of people that you've opened for the festivals you play it and like I saw you played peach festival like like not not just anybody gets invited to peach peaches lighter hand selected are somewhat yeah oyster had played many fucking watching trace road with les Claypool and Stewart cope when I'm like with all the band and all my homies like I used to go to that festival in in the crowd not on the stage and I think I said that the first time we played I'm like we're playing the late night said everybody's you know wide eyed and it's you know %HESITATION freezes land at the same time and I don't know who's gonna show out not you know in a big crowd and I'm just like I should be out there with you guys right now is that the tables are turned but it's such like a %HESITATION I connected experience because like I never thought that I would be on the stage during and I'm honored to do it you know and deliver that energy back so yeah it's a sure he you know me that's definitely don't like it right one of the things that really struck me about your band is how much fun you guys are having on stage that's awesome your that's not made up you know you can't if you're not I know that your your fiddle player yes and like I'm maniacal L. he's please tell me which one three please tell me he's been playing the fiddle like since birth and %HESITATION okay he can really likes your speaker conversation with that thing you know you can this crisis firing wide impressed that's why we got good I mean I'm not saying we're good we're great but like why we improve so much to hop on a stage with him and watch him fucking tear that that a lot of every night like I wanted don't you know that yeah we were pretty new to bluegrass too we just really started getting into it like two thousand nineteen yeah and when we went into the northwest nine or eighteen nineteen and you mentioned like see railroad earth earlier like ten cars yeah now that that like fiddle players are wizards there like those fans they mean they have a look a look in their eyes their playing style and the brand they elevate the whole band you see your break kinda like their leaders kind of it seems like a lot and then they go into these solos to just melt your Miami to be hard I can imagine with map there sometimes where it's hard to even continue playing like you got to stop and just admire what's on order like %HESITATION exposed the plane with them anything like damn I start laughing I'll just be like as I stand right next to him and I'm just looking at his fingers on like I'll literally be on stage I'll start laughing and yet he hasn't she groaned downloaded somewhere along looking for the okay so good so you wait a minute I just want to clarify so you you got lessons and that's how how you got so good eastern line less yes but it's like just putting the intention anybody can download the fucking the platform and have all the videos and go watch it but that's not like applying because at first I didn't know how to practice I was like I was like how the fuck do you where do you start with this you know and we're all like being in Nashville there's like out there people that we need to or playing bluegrass before we like right when we started there's a band called breast mouth and they were real good and they showed us some stuff there's a band still going now called yeah that's a great name you can use certain bills because of the name like the people really now we cannot complain that you have to be really don't there's another one called air show and they've been super cool to us and %HESITATION is that our manager now works with them as well with us %HESITATION Trevor Clarke who used to be in our band used to play bass he's all he he's been doing the grasping for a long time so we've had a lot of people and nationalism help push us along in the world of bluegrass we're super grateful for you all right going into the bluegrass world like one of the things that we quickly learned in like talking to Billy N. thank you guys from green sky is that there is like a there's a divide between like the old school traditional bluegrass players and and the new grass seen it sometimes the new pressing get shade from the traditional guy but it's both great man I feel like that's what you got to remember like that I I love the tragic and I love and I love the new grass stuff so it's like man like I guess people all have their opinions but like the end of the day both of it looking rocks yes yeah it's it doesn't affect you guys and clearly because it's not %HESITATION right you know I think you know errand is fifty and so we've seen the music I'm about to be forty four and y'all are in your twenties thirties right twenty twenty seven twenty seven match twenty three years younger centered on last week's new twenty three court is healthy as whatever your %HESITATION just his oldest is thirty two okay thirty two so like the only reason I mention ages at all in this is because he's seeing it from a longer perspective right we're not I mean each generation is you know a little bit of a shorter perspective so it's it's closing it is what I mean it's not as prevalent as it is right now as when he started to see that you know what I mean and it's really cool to see that evolution where it's like no matter where we just play music at this point you know lego psychedelic grass trash grass bluegrass like who does it really matter grass you know music crap yeah I think that just comes with like one at first I mean the traditional aspect of it it's very not cut and dried but like there's a structure there is a way like some people do want don't want to hear okay a five minute solo you know and like that's fine I don't think you shit on taking a genre and mood and doing something with it but if that's not your Cup of tea then don't go to the gym breast festivals like we don't find ourselves at like straight traditional bluegrass festival we've not really we would love to I love that shit you need to study that stuff to understand how to play bluegrass though that's what you want to learn to go there on some Tony rice records in case you and like you need to have those like that foundation but also we'd be fools not to push it have fun with it and throw so our flavor on it which I think is why people like us and why we've seen great results because we we play bluegrass how we learn how to and that was I sitting around you know throwing shit at the wall figured out how we figured it out we weren't taught by overhead %HESITATION old traditional guys you know we didn't grow up like Billy strings are so good at it because he cut his teeth on that which is the envelope further than just about anybody does which is so quiet you know it's so incredible what he is able to do right down yeah it's an interesting thing but nobody ever like sticks their nose up at us and if they do then they can kick rocks so I wish them the best but like yeah yeah I know I see the wave of like new grass growing like it's like a pretty big waves you guess and you go back it's like you go make a new grass revival start there and like they were the big thing for a while %HESITATION maybe even hot Rize before then maybe the same time not exactly sure but then you go to after you could maybe get to old school yonder after that the late nineties upon the two thousands and that was the hardest thing to Jeff Austin and stuff when you get to greener I age and green skies yeah recipes to the legend of Austin %HESITATION well greens guy an infamous strangle stirs and and they're huge and now we get to billion S. seems like bluegrass is the biggest it's ever been in like for like honestly I had old school yonder is what got me into bluegrass I wasn't I I found bill a little bit later %HESITATION in two thousand seventeen or so and %HESITATION it's cool that we I feel like right now I've I've said it's just another up and coming string bands that we are that we get to play with them like like right now is it like to play string band music now is a great time to be doing it because frankly daily is out here taking down these doors and %HESITATION open to listening to this is not a skill building music you know no and you know it's a trip and like we the first time we saw Billy was a peach yeah yeah N. you know that's a festival said it's different right and and the crowd that's there is there for tray and goose and Billy and everything else and you guys are ever but we went to %HESITATION he played out here at this venue called edge field where you got that actually work for you okay Portland Oregon yeah okay cool all right so we go to the show and it's I would say eighty five percent young heads right right N. to me coming from the group my first Grateful Dead shows in nineteen eighty nine N. okay M. bluegrass was something that the older heads listen to some time bluegrass wasn't prevalent N. it was a trip for me seeing that the crowd that's going in seeing Billy strings shows is eighty five percent twenty something the thirty something heads right N. it's yeah I think it's exactly what you're talking about there's there's a a revival going on right now yeah yeah marginally in part because ability but because of other bands too like the kitchen dwellers out how those are good or ATM big shout out to the kitchen dollars out on tour and we want you on the show we love you we're we got we're actually %HESITATION we'll see them on Sunday for K. fest this upcoming weekend were planned caverns and I'm a guy yeah my the eighth is my birthday so I I saw that right before we got on I was like really fun but just to see it happening right now from my perspective it's fucking cool man yeah and and what Mel said it's like the walls have fallen down as far as your honor goes and we can all just like kind of sit back and agree that this is just a good fucking music it's not right I'm not a heck if I'm listening to or picking bluegrass now LOL and like the trickiest part of all of it is that to me is that bluegrass is some of the most psychedelic shit there is well I am total I never knew that like all these years I found that out at northwestern summit here in Portland in twenty nineteen is that is that in Northfield like the Northfield mandolin festival no no this is called northwest string summit and it's ended it right at the end of our and it looks insane yeah we make it out the kind of lives that %HESITATION that kind of music brings to because when you go to something like bleach it's all it's yes I believe that's what it's like you hit the nail on the head man it's like saying and why old and like right you can find everything you would find at like at a show or dance or whatever you know but like it's less pretentious like yes yeah or like people bring their instruments out your routine like it's and I will you know I've seen a ton of fish you know little shot a hundred shows in like you know I I love that community but I don't get that yeah absolutely I got a big goal time I have it on us yeah I'll ask my shit you know %HESITATION I found the bluegrass through the jam stand straight up since being a beautiful to be able to make some but yeah there are I like them though how the community is just more more wholesome you know I don't really know how to say it but like you can feel it it's ten it's a tangible feeling when you go out to these bluegrass festivals like it's it's family you know not not to be too happy about it but like I said to me the reason that it feels like that to all of us is because it's analog music you when you've got wood and wire and those frequencies do something to our bodies yeah I agree front way then electrified music does to a human being and not here step further and say that and look I'm down for whatever all right let's let's go I'm ready but a step further is you take EDM music that's been made through a computer that's doing something different to our brains and our right our molecules in or whatever then just stringing some wire across the piece of wood that's some primal shit the simplicity brings out our primal nature and our primal nature as humans is like community and gathering right and ground in this like getting down to the earth and so all of these types of %HESITATION you know different blue grass and all that because guys I'm I'm staring at the banjo the whole time I I know I'm getting a bad deal for my birthday yeah hi I fell in love with the banjo at northwest during summit and wait a minute my girl man who married twenty five years right and you know you can make a note of that no no I rarely have seen her like fall in love with a thing right not very materialistic known Tom next bill is right I said on the banjo maker yes okay now I'm not familiar with again without a body that was one of those managers right so he he comes and he brings a neck filled the mail well he didn't bring it to me I felt like it in a beautiful love story it would sound like that he brought me this next and he had a he had with him two years she's like she doesn't want just a banjo I wanna next bill what I did right you know what I realize it's a little bit like a sixteen year old asking for a Ferrari I understand that you don't even play the instrument but what the the whole love and I mean it's kind of back to what we were just saying about the ground innocent about this community and what it does and what it brings is it brings healing in a different type of way music is healing and therapeutic period EDM any any of any drastic is healing but there's also like sometimes you need to go to the emergency room and sometimes you need to go to the oncologist or the guy right so well I know all Hey we're a cult go in so like this kind of music brings a certain healing in our life that's grounding and I I'm sure Alex with you like going through like your rehab and not look I love fish I'm I freakin we're going to fish Mexico I'm stoked on fish and now they're older I would love to party at the office next to what but it's party right it's hard to tell it's like you know with the no holds barred you go to a bluegrass it may be interior no holds barred but the energy around you is so grounding and loving and so safe and secure also like J. like that if it's not like that at all the wall the wrong if you're in the wrong spot that's bad words or if you're in a certain spot in the future you might run into people who are literally just stuffing their face with whatever they can well you often I mean I'm all for get down I'm what I'm what you get down on safe and you're talking thing because I I know I do %HESITATION but was never the intention is not not not for the music right now yeah fine people bluegrass muscles are like this like you have more like either completely get like right now I'm not gonna accessible or like you're open to that you know whatever feeling whatever feelings are gonna happen so when this is that you you're all aware of that and I always think about when the musicians on stage and whatever intention or whatever's going on with them they're they're giving to us as well you know under act that you're aware of that and you were playing a I just want to say thank you because it it feels more nurturing and more soul reviving you know so at the end and Alex I saw that you wrote Little Miss a limited being tipped it I love it thank you I absolutely love the lyrics love this song I felt like you were talking about me and all of my beautiful friends that I know and I felt like it was I just was so for the scene I couldn't have thought of a better song or lyrics to to describe the scene seriously yeah go yeah it was funny I was like it was gonna be like about me like I go outside I write like I go to literally like less logged out of the water is how they spend my time answering to the river I'm like walking down to the river likes it like I'm just singing about what I'm you know and the sun came up and then I was like this isn't this isn't about me and Mike this is about like that that wild festival check that most people know because everybody comes up like that's about my girlfriend I think you know who you are because we all know somebody like that it's a relatable tune yeah I had fun with that one it's not the typical tune that I you know is more a bit more light hearted but also still true to you know what I've seen my experience with you know that type of stuff so thank you I really appreciated that one's got a lot of great %HESITATION great feedback on that one so well also in the full thing in and face the wreckage right like this is a new way and that I'll say this about that it felt like a familiar song that I've heard at the same time with brand new beautiful lyrics in Lakeville just like it it felt really good to hear yeah that one guy wrote %HESITATION I think I really a little bit before we recorded the before we %HESITATION recorded the record and I think I snuck in and they're not like just for our producer John mail under he actually played on Billy strings first two albums fiddle player on home and on renewal okay that might get in there and he picked it up you know as one of the ones you thought should be on there and it really came together but that's it yeah that's a meaningful experience in me and I'm glad that I made and I brought you know made it made the cut yeah brought to life so we're yes superstar to have that song out so I just I just told up was like we've been we've been at it for over half hour we haven't even talked about the new notes like we always do it sometimes we talk for a half hour don't even talk about music well I have our hang up on me I at the rate three people and let me tell you Alex when you listen yeah well when you listen back you'll enjoy your own interview that's what I really feel like one of the when %HESITATION Patrick from cycles none of you know who cycle yet right %HESITATION %HESITATION I'm at your store like six years ago or sent packs out of mass because when Erin and I we love them right and so when Erin and I just we literally got out of the car walked on the fish a lot we bump into Patrick right yeah it's so amazing sorry well I don't know that you're in yeah the trains off the track okay yeah mom you're a shout out to give a shout yes it's for doing that I saw you guys you guys are doing a couple dates with eighty we will always fall in love with those guys too got to meet a moderate %HESITATION peach festival and stuff all right yeah we have a like injured like I've seen him play and %HESITATION I want to say residents about so I can't remember where I saw him play out but I love there I've been following him online and I love the energy like they just happy goofy kind of guys so I'm excited to yeah we posted those dates I think today or yesterday and like a ton of people immediately started texting me you know though those are the boys so yeah we're excited about the upcoming collaborations with certain as a neighbor also I don't know if you guys can get %HESITATION cool cool guys and we got some Spafford dates coming up to the the guys Apollo sons that are here right before we got on with you guys there third lead singer came down he was like do that banning your interview in there the fucking opening for Spafford man our body just started managing Spafford he manages dogs in the pile and it's been cool to like immediately as we get our day started coming through roster at the position so like we're going to Montana and he's fine it's gonna be a and B. I can make anything you know it's gone by the end of its cool how everything is these connections are making between bands now it's all paralleling in weird ways and yes yeah seeing the scene everybody were all each other's biggest bands Leeds metropolitan a pile that's our listing Jamie and see yeah Brian right and you're starting to write some songs together in that kit is like gonna be authorized so I can inspire the hell out of me on big love for dogs in the pile peach festival we we interviewed them live on stage of peace or not on stage or in like the large and we got to meet his dad whose sole the old man and in celebration yeah we just play with them in Nashville actually on our when was that %HESITATION when the month ago we had a co headlining gig with them in national and it was and we did a joint set we did a sick the dogs on %HESITATION so is we I was a part that we play just said and then we did a collaborative set for the last one so sad to Brooklyn bowl no no okay now we %HESITATION yeah basin uses another venue in town %HESITATION that's it it's a great venue and almost got torn down by them %HESITATION tornado couple years back but she said it's up and running it's a beautiful spot we we keep saying to you that that's on our hit list that's like we gotta go to Nashville like I'm always out there do you do you have any plans to come out west out our way we're taking a little break here for a second don't freak out thank you well okay I'm sorry we're going to tell you about some cannabis stuff go head hold cannabis well if you're up in the Portland area where we are at you can come visit do you find premium cannabis yep it is %HESITATION find dispensaries to handle all your cannabis CBD THC needs we have one location Hillsboro OR I work out my my day and we have a location cute little boutiques our forest Grove and when you come in are we like to take our time with you navigate you through the perfect you know all these perfect treats are out there there's new stuff every week we take our time and we want to get you headed out the door with that sack of stuff that's going to make you feel good C. okay check this out back in the day you're gonna be like what Erin but just stick with me here Hey %HESITATION seals ari I'm sticking with you back in the day I went to work for apple not you but the actual company apple that iPods and star member you're a genius that's right but one of the things that really stoked me out about working for apple after I had been there a couple of months was there thing with people coming into the store was not to try and sell them a bunch of shit they didn't need they were like look when people come in what you want to do is figure out the product that will help that person in their life and make their life better when they leave the store with it if you can only sell one thing tomb that makes their life better than psalm one thing we don't want to sell a bunch of crap and I feel like that's how developers added I I feel like I'm a cannabis genius you are an apple genius apple cannabis B. S. at the fine print cancels when you come in and visit us make sure to tell us that you are a listener of no simple road because then we'll be really excited we'll give you a ten percent discount and will give you a free T. shirt apple might even jump up and down for joy yeah I might even give you more in a ten percent discount because I does that kind of guy okay so defined premium cannabis two locations here in Portland one in Hillsboro one in forest Grove apple works in Hillsboro and now we're gonna get back to second hollow and find out if the if they're gonna come out west here we go yeah we got a man there's one that we can I don't think an ounce yet but it will be out relatively close to where you all are and %HESITATION yeah okay well what about okay so Erin so we had talked about the album let's hear about the album nice cool yeah %HESITATION in a long time coming up in a resting just because like they're the logistical hoops you got I got up here like we recorded it quite awhile ago I anywhere %HESITATION the end of January beginning of February maybe but %HESITATION various things you know I can get into it but you know we gotta do this this this and then John it's been produced by engineer by Abadi Daniel Davis who is an incredible engineer works through southern ground which is like %HESITATION Zac brown studio in town okay and %HESITATION there's you know lining up their schedules and then when we were gonna naturally release it %HESITATION we had a whole Virginia what dates are gonna line up so that's actually what we made the dogs in the pile show was supposed to be the album release and then now we're working with the publicist in like the record how they're recommending us do it %HESITATION just ended up pushing it back you know so it just got finalized though like all the editing you know or whatever any aspects and close tracking production stuff it just got down and it is very good so I know that like whenever I record myself playing in I hear it back it's I can't handle it like yeah read but you start scrutinizing the hell out of me yeah or not and you're actually I'm looking to have an entire album of new stuff like that do you do you guys sit down as a band and like listen to the whole thing together yeah yeah yeah absolutely just because it's gonna like you know there's a point where it's like Hey if you hear anything like speak up in everybody's listening differently yeah like I'm you know the guitar I'm gonna be analyzing that is like %HESITATION the Phils squeaks like a pocket you know like whatever you know I was like how could you you know what you know this is so is it is yes we are but it's alright also where everybody's you know you got to get everybody together and say fucking pay attention this is what we're doing they were gonna run through it and I will listen to it a couple times and speak your mind right now and then we'll go through song by song if you hear anything finicky you know right rewind it check that out what do y'all think boom move on that's when the songs are done when they were in the studio everybody's NIT picking the shit out of it and you have to have a producer there to be like all right guys we're moving on the same I've been around in the studio for as long as you want which eventually hopefully you know get that where there's no time constraints three to create and beat you now but %HESITATION with the recent you know we three four days in there and it cost a good bit of money so tight you know get in there in the morning and get on your should be ready to go and don't spend too long neck picking one little thing right so what's the in this experience of creating this album what the two part question what's the hardest thing about it and what's the most fun thing about it I mean I'm just going to the studio and get in that zone and like we did like a twelve hour days for I think six or seven days like a whole week I think for five make for any film studios right on so we were in there for a while and it was a I guess it goes by like a blur and it's so fun you're just just focus the day just goes by like that and %HESITATION well you're you're you're thinking about what way you're listening constantly you're trying to see it as the big picture but also trying to put yourself on a microscope %HESITATION it's all mind set out in mass it's it's like a different thing than planned shows but %HESITATION this creative process is a %HESITATION like I say on to %HESITATION I like going on tour because of like turns off the world around you you're just focusing in the next place when you're making a record like that it's it shuts off everything else you're just there and here you're focusing on making that record and making it the best it can be right that sounds amazing thank I can't even imagine it could be stressful two of your plan like shit you know and you're like on time is money at that point and like I think that's the hardest part about it is if you go in and you're not on and then it's like okay we'll what's the next song or you gotta know when to call that %HESITATION when people are you know these are getting frustrated people who you want and you know it's come back to talk to you like Tom do you know or whatever you start tensioner just because you're trying to make this everybody wants the same you know in their own same end result but I might look differently but we all want to make this you know piece of compilation of music that it you know most people or invokes emotion and and flows and tell the story or whatever reasons a concept so I did that in the end is rewarding you know like you go through all the bullshit not even bullshit that's a better way to put it like the obstacles and the work that needs to go in and some days are like stop that was you know how having fun then like eight hours in your on your like six couple copping you got a headache and you're like alright we're starting on the big jammer track or whatever you like all you know you gotta get dig deep and and power through because it's tiring but then you get down there and you probably align you all get out you know it's a good work boys now fast forward to now we get to slough away in my bed and you know get stoned and listen to our record and have a move you know in which I can say about this one it moved me I got a couple different times and I'm like cool you know the chance to fall back on what you were saying about listening yourself %HESITATION it can be terrible but then when you think it's good your likes or good you know wow we created something like I made myself feel you know feel a certain type of way so like yeah it's a rewarding process but it's a roller coaster too so you know man I know that's not like life man I noticed some yeah %HESITATION understand talking to you guys that you're very careful with your your words you're very fucking careful with your words yeah you you got to be now not like that no no I mean I I yeah yes that too leave me having a podcast hearing all these shit anyway but wait a minute why here's my G. Erin said that I I thought he was reading what I wrote because I said very aware of speech is something that our I I have right now through the show my mom kind of instilled that in me because I was growing up I was out of the docking she's saying shout out yeah yeah sounds well %HESITATION she would always say I hate your next stop she's like that doesn't suck biker that wasn't the first one but Hey it was one where you know I like I hate that you guys you don't hate anything you can say you know it is like a satellite I'm gonna extreme you know either you know yeah I've been speaking with its I think doing everything with intention in out anything part of my life if I can apply intention to I didn't think it ends up being more meaningful and I have a I have more direction in my life when I lived in each day with intentions on and that's how it faced a record is about to leave that all around yeah well you know I'm I'm I'm really really stoked that we connected because right right yeah I'm in the the trip like seeing younger bands because to me like Mel said I'm fifty guys are younger than me right in younger bands coming up now like I I've been around long enough to see a few revolutions of the wheel you know what I mean yeah and like you guys have been given a gift N. N. number you're not like you're completely grateful N. N. any closer are you just talking to you like I can harass I can see in your eyes in your face like you get what this is N. and it's every morning and you're putting everything into it and it goes so far as watching what you say and how you talk about it because you know that that has power and that right shit resonates with whatever's not shell out there but that's whatever is out there because we're talking about it and you guys are not put now should know you're putting out some incredible here you have fun music that is really elevating our souls I was feeling really bad today guys I it we've been on it or is it like an emotional roller coaster like we could don't know Latin relate yeah right not just me but like I'm talking about myself personally like I was just like family the family you know right it's coming home I I was just in LA for five days on the heels of a wedding on the heels of all these like things right like very emotional things and I was just merely feeling like I wanted to withdraw and kinda like isolate and then the band was coming that we were just talking about a policy and so I was like kind of secretly begrudging it because I was just like just again I was feeling crummy and and having like just tell motional overload is really what it feels like like I could just cry I'm not upset about anything I'm just the mobile out from all right I do not that's good if you can if it's coming out take advantage it needs to flow but like then they got here and I'm I got so grateful that they're here and they start tearing up just feeling the energy in the house and the gratitude and then we hop on with you guys and I'm like man I don't want a friggin do it interview tonight I'm tired of it but like doing all this bullshit and it's always the stuff that you say you don't want to do that's like the medicine for your ailment %HESITATION %HESITATION %HESITATION man your creation acquired wanted to say it out loud to all young because if I didn't say it only I would know about it you know and so I'm putting myself out there like I needed this and I didn't want to do it and I'm just saying for all the people who have like shit out there like their stuff hanging around in their life like that you don't want to do it just the World Cup mustered up man however you can I am sorry I yeah I'm first of all your beautiful faces and then stewards of what you've been given I was going to add something to this because this is this is a further story about Mel late last week and they went to a wedding down in Humboldt County like you know night drive from here they got up early in the morning at like four thirty five in the morning to drive straight home to change so we could go see tab to display field I work in in in any of course with the she was we're all happy to be there but Mel tells us she's all guys I'm just not pulling myself from feeling kind of antisocial so if I'm not really into the show you know don't worry about me I'm still having a good time but I'm just not feeling fast forward like a half hour later that's right one of the more demand you know help to the substances you guys know because sometimes what you can do if you %HESITATION this is the mature audience now but taking something sometimes it can elevate that depressed mood that you're in Hey it's medicine and and other times it can take it further down yeah well yeah right I'm going to it happened on multiple occasions in multiple different facets yes yeah you all know and so sometimes I'm just begin %HESITATION I I because when you're in the public eye you know I am very aware of I I love people and I love to share myself and talk and X. lake cheer people on and like hell yeah rightly but then when you're not feeling that inside and you're around that same environment your feet like I I feel like I'm doing it I don't want to be the black hole sucking the energy out right that's the digging and so the digging deep it's like thank god for my band my right to guys because honestly the whole night I'd like surrounded and then I and then all of a sudden like you know what I got this like I'm in my mo Jo back I I got it back and so I don't know I just I'm the seed I'm really grateful for and I'm grateful for you all twenty seven that's my daughter's age man that is my daughter's age at lake I cheer on the East African twenty seven twenty eight twenty nine twenties because everybody used to say all this generation they don't know about that that bud talking down on it yeah full I feel like this generation they know what's no I like the lyrics so that your spin now along with the music and how far you've gotten at a tender young age and all the experience like life experience I'm doing air quotes everybody needed that idea it's funny how it all worked out I can write I if I didn't have the experience I would have said to write about you know one the whole way along T. like we're saying to you of having keeping tradition alive having respect for yourself and and what came before I went ahead of us like so many of you somebody the bands we mentioned dogs in a pot like all these are at Wade and being older I I'm I got bad with that get better with that because I a lot of bands and a lot of local bands up for you I was like man you kids like I say it to me like it's not disrespect I I say I say that just because you give me hope when I'm old enough to be your dad yeah it's no back because like I mean our our dad used to do it we're gonna you kids and it's like I'm twenty eight you know I know when I'm growing this man you know but it no I yeah I I know you don't want to most three year old child a lot of and you know it's better to be that way yeah that's what keeps yeah you you can still had never quit never have your hours moments too you know yeah and we all got it all out constantly well you know I have a question for them after you okay go ahead well I just I take us down a different road the you're gonna take us on the phone I just want to finish up you're talking about like intention and stuff like that a minute ago and there's this really amazing quote that I came across right before I moved from Las Vegas to Portland and it was like brain food that I would chew on for a really long time and I want to hear from both of you like how you would interpret this or what you would think about okay the way you do anything is the way you do everything yeah I I've got some I think that's a that's definitely holds true but you gotta practice that you know I think there's a real lesson that statement but %HESITATION I think that's interesting arguments saying I like the I like that statement a lot but I think in reality that's one that's something that like if you wanna do everything the very best you can and that's not just an automatic thing you got to work it out yeah absolutely then like I think it's it's also gave you could look at a black and white I guess and then might NextEra which things in perspective I guess yourself that's a question I like that you actually tracked the side a little bit because I mean I didn't it was like just waking up with direction or wait like living your day with intention %HESITATION for awhile I don't really think about it like like I don't know it was interesting when I when I first found passion and purpose all that kind of became natural I don't really have a choice is my day there's not enough time in the day for me to like like there's not enough time to date needed you know in my life shit like you know I want to live a hundred I want to live as long as I can and like there's to do that %HESITATION efficiently or effectively and get everything I want and %HESITATION you do you gotta you know you you got to live each day with some intention in some direction and get out of bed and not fucking you know watch TV all day or what whatever you know there's a time and place for all of that but like sign something good do it and then figure out how you're going to do it and you you know wake up and and be good at it so I don't know that's interesting quote I like that a lot yeah it was just something when I you know my dad say that no no this is actually was it was a friend of mine and I I just are talking because I grew up and my mom I wish you were taught me some issue Tom is a really awesome stuff but like my mom was very hasty in and fast and quick with a lot of things that she did we got to hurry up and goes to her yet but everything was always like very you know a time consumption like you know you know it's time was more important than doing it properly is my point right and so I started to reflect on my when I heard this statement at that time I was really heavy into yoga and %HESITATION that really stopped me because I was like Russia had a tendency to rush and I wasn't necessarily doing things better I was just doing things faster right and so it really should like shone the light on my a hasty this and my quickness and then I was like I'd much rather be more like you said Alex intentional and like thoughtful and mindful when I do things instead of fast when I do things well that's exactly what Alex was talking about when I asked about learn picking yeah and he was like yeah like fiddle tunes slow it down right in the melody that's right that's that statement is slowing it down and learning the melody in life yes right yeah yeah I'm in patients here like I've I've I can identify with that my parents didn't like instilled that in me I would just always like you know we're out to eat and like don't pay with your credit card like you can't they're gonna have to go right like you have a cat you know is always like quickly like %HESITATION it's been such a wide net an obstacle for me to tackle in my life because it's like a fishing spear like we're gone what we need to get there now this is in my head like this is how it is and I'm trying to like chill out and you know but also still remain productive and you know but all things are exactly how they want it in my head it's okay and I don't freak out you know I'm requiring my head currently and I happened to be two yeah so I'm going to do I'm gonna tell you something that thanks guys for participating and that gives me tell you something like I remember my my dad was like eighty five twenty past eight N. he would say to me I feel like I'm still a teen in my head and I was like how the hell can you feed babies be eighty five and still feel like you're eighteen in your head right I get it now I totally get it like us on that that doesn't go away and the I think that doing psychedelics for a long time his help I know the three of us like keep that mindset of like constantly rewiring to I make things work better and at least for me it's given me like distance from my bullshit so I could see it right do you know what I mean by that yeah I'd like have a separation from my baggage and and be like oh I'm doing the thing that I do right right I need to not do that where normally it would have just been like a knee jerk reaction do you have the same experience with psychedelics like that it's giving you that space to yeah absolutely and I think even like recently re re defining a relationship with you know I don't need to get to enter it sorry mother %HESITATION she's aware whatever but you know it is a medicine I think for a long time I didn't treat it as medicine as I could get worry in Spanish you know which is great hello yeah hi that's voluntary times you know you you know reaching those spaces and then also had not that great at times or it's like meat grinder and I'm like what is that it you know like just hectic like what where was the insight in that you know in that whole situation like I don't fucking or remember what happened last ten hours so I think redefining that and now what using them more again back to the intention having a reason that that's just to go to a show and enjoy it like hell yeah but like re instill that in your head rather than just like I'm not as much like somebody to show that Hey man open your hand and I'm like all right you know now I'm like now I'm you know it what I know I'll get whatever I need for the night like I'm just not as inclined to beat that like how going with it but yeah I like the insight in the it is grounds me you know and I don't need all the time I don't know it's been times in my life where it's been more frequent and when I you know I take a step back and I think developing a respectful relationship with everything kinda help you not get your place all the time with that which you know you need a contact to you know maybe that happened to you the other night like you might make you sound like you overcame like a a mental battle and figure something out about that you know you're great did you change your reality you can change the situation and have a terrible fucking trip terrible you know not an enjoyable experience and then five hours later you're blessed mode and you've battled through that you like all right the night you know it it turns with the flip of a switch so one thing I found to you is a I haven't done a lot of shit we just did %HESITATION I did a show I'm rarely the DVD for a show when I saw this %HESITATION Thielen friends with Kim and stuff it was only yeah it was the first %HESITATION I I like that not usually if I usually consider a sober showed smoking weed and maybe have a couple beers I didn't do anything I went to the show and I'm I'm sure you can relate to even if you're just doing a little bit of style where I went completely sober when I left I was so high because once we've been there we know that frequency we've all been there you go to a festival or show you pick up especially on your family your friends your route where someone tune lately like you guys as a band us as what we do we share one brain a lot of time so like I walked out that show able to drive a little B. CO hair and everything but hi is hell and upon the crowd and everything so it to me like you said it's not always necessary it's it's a it's fun to navigate the world and like so many different ways and and like I said two men the the the whole idea of re framing them how you approach the medicine yeah even car even called it like a while back we started saying like instead of saying the we we took drugs at a show or whatever we say we took set we took our sacrament that act like that was so beautiful honestly because it did change we were doing drugs at one point and then it changed and turned into a sacrament right over you you pulled in about three years ago I did because well there was about one echo of it now was like oh she's All I Want you kind of have a ceremony when it like you said we need to have intention the kind of set this up and have a ceremony and sit together and do you know like now we usually draw tarot cards and do we do several things to try to treat it right and ourselves right I I mean stick with me but like it's the same thing with with sex to lake when you're young you just wanna get off as much as you can you know how it doesn't matter girlfriend the girl from boyfriend to boyfriend whatever and then at a certain point you fall in love you realize like sex is different you know and when you're using sex abusively it's not it feels good great like you said like you know just get highlighted the staff feels good to sometimes but then you like to wake up the next morning you feel like empty you're like what the hell is that really there's not as much yeah right thank things did to maturity and you know you know you're exposed to so much as musicians you know it's like the party it's like the all right and so it's easy for you to be irreverent for things because there's so much coming at you right but that's also in turn teaches you how to be reference because now you've got all this act access and ability and now it's like what do I really want to bring into my body into my life into my home and it it all of that food you know like look do this do that to this to this it makes you more discerning and scrutinizing about what you do and it's a good thing for a lot of people to be kind of tested with that to really see what you're made of you know what yeah when you're strong it may be a little bit easier but even when you're weak you should still at some point be able to have control over your you know over certain things you know what I mean that's something that I've wondered for with you guys like coming up quickly because you guys are coming up fast there's yeah there's weight behind you great yeah N. Struve has it been difficult for you guys to navigate like the the backstage part of this you know like the personal part the the the inter arsenal part between you guys in like how quickly everything's happening how has that been for you it's very organic and cool in the you know every time I check each other and there's you know %HESITATION we're getting a better grip on it you know hand just handling everything and knowing how to maintain yourself on the road and you know I get sick pretty easily like I don't I stopped our first tour like I didn't drink or even smoke much at all you know I bring like nice oil like my little like electronic reading low temp dabs in like no blue is like I don't wanna lose my voice and then I had to learn how to navigate like not getting a tip C. area a little buzz before I go onstage and all these little things but it's like the show is first and foremost I think in like it are I know some of the limits of my body and what's going to longevity is key you know and %HESITATION we've been navigating in now at the end with the band relationship and us being on the van and we all live together and we you know I mean we live in this house friend Matt lives here to Paris was across town but like it's a relationship you got to nurture it you know we bought has quite a bit nothing crazy but like it's natural and you can't let things get to you are you also going to stand up for yourself and be respectful and there's all these old it's so much honestly most complex relationship I've ever encountered but like we know it's real we live together the same thing you're you're on the same chip like you guys are in the same head space like that's a beautiful beautiful relationship that relationship and partnership to have with anybody if you do feel like if you have the opportunity in this life to connect with anybody like that is sacred you know %HESITATION yeah wanted it to be opened so most important I mean that's the truest thing a communication like we've let argued if you lost faster than it turns into like nasty I know you can finally get it out on the table ninety nine percent of the time it's like we just laugh well that was not right and I thank you yeah I was thinking one time when we me and Erin we're talking shit behind apple's back then apple's like why did you just tell me guys it was no big deal like I think it was it was and it's something going on for weeks and I was like yeah I can tell to it I was like I don't remember what it was now every time I come in the room so you guys get quiet if I can in the lead and we all laughed as they all you had to do was tell me and I'll fucking quit do I can't remember what it whatever it was so dark me and they thought it was too and we just laughed about it's like next I so now all like %HESITATION so we're really good at like this I think you're being a Dick get out it's like sorry I'm being a Dick %HESITATION quit doing that thanks for Salem addict all even though we've been living there for six years that's quite a long time and we're still learning how to relate to one another it never stops you know like we're changes yeah because that was just the other day and like not too long ago how how's it been for you okay well %HESITATION well we're sorry we'll know where we wish Matt was Shadowman out on the she man it's been good %HESITATION what was the initial question you asked the interpersonal you know you guys got a lot of momentum behind you you're sick hello is coming up fast yeah a lot of those listed he there's a lot of shit going on a lot of stuff in the yeah with all you guys living together and all the how's it been for you well %HESITATION so I zoom out like we started the band and it was like like anything like we're just some friends were getting together and jamming together and it was all for fun and our friends are coming out of the shows were going on going on to our friend shows and it was %HESITATION in the national community still there but you know we're all getting older we're %HESITATION we're we're now on the agency and we can't plan nationals much as we want to but it's been %HESITATION so it's we and we ask for the pressures on you know like where it became where we're just a group of friends and our friends to come see us and they would really much pressure we just played a show and and %HESITATION we are a matter to us that we didn't get it but it didn't necessarily matter that like we no one was coming here to show that I never met us before in there we had to write for lack of better word of some to prove get make sure they get their money's worth for the show you some yeah and now now we have to now we get to practice and get better and better and we and %HESITATION the pressures on again S. like me ask for that and that's awesome and so that's been the more goes on like anything else like it just %HESITATION it builds and builds but it's a we get to be a part of all that you know they were living the dream it's fucking crazy to men that's what the answer is and what it was a dramatic congrats because you guys are you you're on the bill for %HESITATION winter grass are you yeah and and I steamboat yeah right looking at a lineup yeah that's that's our motto and kind of friends are gonna come out we get ski passes for the whole weekend everyone like you know like all they're they're doing so well congratulations guys thank you where can the folks listening find out like about your tour and follow you and all that crazy stuff website Sigurd Allah dot com everything Instagram we might have a twat we private Twitter no we're not very active on that everything is going to be through Instagram or Facebook and through the website you'll find it all everything on there and you see that there's some stuff in there are like four days and all that stuff go on you can sign up for the newsletter or where we post about everything
