CALLING ALL FAMILY!!!!

The Cat you see pictured below, behind Jerry, is Uncle Jay. Uncle Jay has been a fixture in the Southern California Grateful Dead Family. He and his wife Mary lovingly have grown cannabis for years and worked hard to make sure that Jerry was always taken care of on that front. Their medicine was the fuel for much of the beloved Garcia/Grisman music we now know and love.

Well, now it’s our turn to step up. When an emergency room visit on Sept. 7 showed not only an inguinal hernia, but also enlarged lymph nodes, further blood work and scans confirmed advanced prostate cancer, which has spread to multiple areas. Working with an oncologist, Jay has been started on a regimen of shots to slow the cancer’s growth (it cannot be eliminated, only slowed). He has recently been made aware of a new drug (a daily pill) which, when taken in conjunction with the shots, increases the success of the regimen. The new pills are super expensive and would have to be continued, like the shots, from here on out. We’re looking at $45,000- $65,000 of out of pocket expenses plus copay costs for the possible 3-5 years they’re hoping to have here together.

Take a moment and click the link below to donate what you can to help these two pillars of our Grateful Dead Family. Let’s put our money where our love is.

No Simple Road’s Weekly Rewind

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between! We produce these episodes in collaboration with The Edible Beats out of Denver, Colorado. Do yourself a favor and head over to their website to find out more!

This week on the rewind we're taking everything we learned while seeing Phish at The Sphere in Las Vegas and laying it out for those of us headed to see Dead & Company over the next few months. Getting into the venue, security, after-the-show scene, and all the rest.

The Sphere venue in Las Vegas is not just a concert location, it's an otherworldly experience that reshapes our understanding of live music. Join us as we recount how the sound system and acoustics of the Sphere left an indelible mark, providing a concert experience that lingers long after the final note. We help you navigate the electric maze that is Vegas during a buzzing weekend of racing and Dead and Company concerts, sharing gems on how to thrive in its pulsing throng, especially for those of us who are more empathically inclined. We even get into a little of Vegas' post-concert psychedelia and how it paints a vivid picture of the city's unique brand of chaos, as we muse over potential setlists and visuals for a Sphere concert that could redefine the Dead and Company experience.

Throughout the episode, we touch upon the community and camaraderie that defines the Dead & Company shows, offering a blend of reverence for the original Grateful Dead legacy and excitement for this fresh chapter. We wrap up with a contemplation of life's journey, likening our individual paths to the meticulous process of alchemy, where challenges transmute into growth and clarity emerges from the chaos.

International Orange - Beats and Rhythms

Ep. 365

The comforting rhythm of routine can be just as enchanting as the electric buzz of a live event, as Mel, Apple, and I reminisce about the post-Sphere event bliss and the quirky sprout-hiding antics of our pals Meg and Sean.

This week we're grooving to the soundwaves of International Orange, whose sophisticated beats are the perfect backdrop to our tales — from a virtual listening party to their upcoming New York gigs, we've got the scoop on why this band is a must-see for fans of funky vibes akin to Medeski, Martin and Wood.

Experience the thrill of a live music journey with us as a fan calls in to rave about the Disco Biscuits' tour, sparking reflections on our insightful interview with Barber and the transformative power of their performances. The conversation then sails into the choppy waters of Grateful Dead-centric festivals, pondering the future of these iconic events as we speculate on the potential rise of more intimate, community-driven gatherings. Join us for this candid exploration of resilience in the music scene, personal milestones, and the strangely elastic concept of time that stretches and contracts in the wake of the pandemic.

Crystal Flores of The Grateful Death - Embracing The Journey's End

Ep. 364

Death, a companion on our life's journey, often arrives shrouded in silence and fear. Yet, Crystal Flores, a death doula from The Grateful Death, opens a candid dialogue to demystify this final passage. With her guidance, we traverse the emotional and practical facets of end-of-life, uncovering the importance of conversations that many shy away from. She brings her expertise to the fore, coaching families to maintain cherished relationships amidst the chaos of a loved one's passing, all while navigating the complexities of choices like Voluntary Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED).

Through our exchange with Crystal, we confront the cultural discomfort around death and delve into personal transformations that come from being at death's doorstep. Her transition from a high-powered saleswoman to an end-of-life professional, catalyzed by personal loss, underscores the profound impact such experiences have on our lives. Our narratives weave through the emotional and spiritual tapestry of dying, illustrating how an open dialogue and acknowledgment of mortality can lead to a dignified and peaceful transition. We ponder the cultural implications of death and grieving, and the solace found in understanding the journey of passing, which can offer comfort when facing our own mortality.

As we conclude, the stories shared in this episode radiate with humanity and compassion, highlighting the essence of our connections and the delicate balance of offering support to those at the end of their journey. We hear poignant tales of comfort in final moments – a stepmother reaching out for a familiar touch, a sister regressing to childlike innocence – offering glimpses into the transformative power of presence and empathy. These candid moments serve as a reminder of the peace that can come from embracing the inevitable with intention and grace, and the vital role end-of-life professionals like Crystal play in guiding that journey.
