Guitarist Neal Casal, keyboardist Adam MacDougall (his bandmate in the Chris Robinson Brotherhood), bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy recorded seven instrumentals for LET IT WANDER earlier this year at Castaway 7 Studios in California.
Originally, Circles Around the Sun (CATS) was only supposed to record some Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concerts. EP 85 - SAVING THE WORLD WITH ANDY FRASCO
Andy Frasco of Andy Frasco & The U.N. and Andy Fraso’s World Saving Podcast joins the No Simple Road Crew on The Porch for a morning filled with laughs, unexpected therapy, and creating connection. We talk candidly about addiction & getting it together, making choices based on what we think we’re supposed to do rather than what we want, Andy’s new album ‘Change Of Pace’, and why we are only just now finding out we should have been friends a long time ago.
Andy Frasco & the U.N.’s performances have been described as a "boisterous blend of harmonic funk and jazzy influences, all topped with boundless energy". Frasco frequently calls additional guest musicians to join his band on stage during sets, as well as fans. Shows are highly improvisational featuring impromptu “battles” between band members, who graciously hop off stage into the crowd to contest their instrumental fortitude against one another in a sporting display of individual musicianship. Frasco's shows are also highly interactive, often stopping the show to speak directly to audience members, as well as invite people in the audience up on stage.
EP 86 - DIGGING UP OUR ROOTS WITH CANNABIS ACTIVIST DAVID ADAM KASAKOVE
This week’s episode is the product of letting the Freak Flag fly. Cannabis Activist and Psychedelic Warrior David Adam Kasakove joins us to tell his story. We talk about his life growing up with parents who had dropped out, working as a Cannabis Activist, the music of The Grateful Dead and its impact on his life, touring with The Band Beyond Description, and a whole ton more! This is one of those times when we collectively realized we were in the presence of one of our Freak Family elders. I know you are all going to really enjoy this conversation…
Instead of going to a website or learning more about this or that we ask that everyone out there take a moment to remember all of those that are still suffering or imprisoned behind the unjust and asinine laws of The War on Drugs and Cannabis Prohibition. This episode is dedicated to them!
EP 87 - DIGGIN’ DEEP WITH TIM BLUHM
We spend some time talking with Tim from The Mother Hips about his new solo album “Sorta Surviving’, the accident and how its affected his music and his life, playing at Terrapin Crossroads, coming to grips with one’s mortality, and a whole lot more. This is one of those conversations that’ll make you think.
Tim Bluhm began his musical journey while studying at Chico State, where he co-founded the now-iconic Mother Hips, a group the San Francisco Chronicle has hailed as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits.” Performing at frat parties quickly gave way to club shows, regional touring, and national buzz, and before they’d graduated from school, Bluhm and his bandmates were signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings on the strength of their debut album, ‘Back To The Grotto.’ Over the ensuing two-and-a-half decades, Bluhm would release eight more studio albums with the band as they cemented their status as architects of a new breed of California soul and earned a reputation as festival and critical favorites, sharing bills with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes along the way. Rolling Stone called them “divinely inspired,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop," and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.”
EP 88 - THE MAGICK OF FAMILY WITH COMEDIAN DUNCAN TRUSSELL
Comedian and fellow podcaster Duncan Trussell returns to The Porch this week! As you can imagine, the conversation took on a life of its own as we discussed Duncan’s Son, childbirth, epigenetic memory, porch-wide orgasm, creating a tax for being kind and love tokens, and what it means to listen with your entire body. We all came away from this conversation feeling high and extremely awake and I know you’ll come away with some new insights into your trip through this mortal coil.
You can check our more of Duncan on his Podcast, ‘The Duncan Trussell Family Hour’ and head over to duncantrussel.com for his stand up dates, merch, and past episodes of the DTFH!
EP 89 - BREAKING THE BARRIERS WITH THE LEGENDARY JOHN MEDESKI
We had the honor of spending some time with John discussing his evolution in music, what it’s like to create utterly improvisational music in, and for, the moment, music as prayers and the sacred nature of sound, the difference between producing music and playing it, his new album with Mad Skillet, and a whole lot more.
Equally comfortable behind a Steinway grand piano, Hammond organ or any number of vintage keyboards, John Medeski is a highly sought after improviser and band leader whose projects range from work with John Zorn, The Word (Robert Randolph, North Mississippi Allstars), Phil Lesh, Don Was, John Scofield, Coheed & Cambria, Susana Baca, Sean Lennon, Marc Ribot, Irma Thomas, Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and many more. Classically trained, Medeski grew up in Ft.Lauderdale, FL where as a teenager he played with Jaco Pastorius before heading north to attend the New England Conservatory. He released his first solo piano record, A Different Time, on Sony’s Okeh Records in 2013, and current projects include a new album in the works with his band MadSkillet (Terrence Higgins, Kirk Joseph, Will Bernard), and HUDSON (a collaboration with Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield & Larry Grenadier), plus a documentary on Medeski Martin & Wood.

This week’s episode is a testimony to the power of Instagram and creating connection through technology! When it was all said and done we realized our Family had just grown!
If you are dealing with the reality of suicidal thoughts or depression, please remember that you matter! Reach out and let someone give you a hand… call 1-800-273-8255
EP 92 - GROWING UP DEAD WITH CRIS JACOBS
When Cris Jacobs began dreaming about a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2016 album Dust to Gold, he realized early on he'd have to do things differently this time around. His life had changed drastically since writing those songs: he'd toured extensively and attracted a legion of new, devoted fans; he'd come off the road into a world, with its divisive rhetoric and troubling headlines, he no longer recognized; and, most importantly, he'd gotten married and had his first child. Things had changed, and Jacobs had, too. The No Simple Road Crew spends some time talking with Cris about being a Dad, where is music comes from, growing up with Deadhead Parents, his $100 bet with his Dad, playing with Phil Lesh, and so much more!

EP 95 - GOING DOWN THE ROAD WITH MILE 12
Nate from the Contemporary Bluegrass Band 'Mile 12' joins the No Simple Road Crew this week! This conversation was a real blast and we got into the similarities of playing music and meditation, humanizing tough topics through songwriting, coming to terms with not always feeling up to playing, the place of the spreadsheet in the life of a touring band, and a whole bunch more! Although their sound is rooted in traditional bluegrass, Mile Twelve surveys a broader landscape on their newest album, City on a Hill. All five band members bring their own influences and observations into the music, resulting in a project that feels contemporary, thoughtfully crafted, and relevant and we're stoked to bring them to you this week!.
